Lighthouse — "Still Here"

Free crisis helpline extension for AI chatbot platforms

Open source · 100% private · By Red Specter Security Research

When someone tells an AI chatbot they want to end their life, the chatbot may respond helpfully — but it cannot pick up a phone. It cannot call the Samaritans. It cannot sit with someone in their darkest moment.

Lighthouse bridges that gap. It puts real phone numbers in front of real people at the moment they need them most.

What Lighthouse Does

Lighthouse is a browser extension that runs silently in the background while someone uses an AI chatbot. If the conversation shows signs of crisis — self-harm, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, severe loneliness, or deep despair — Lighthouse gently displays a panel with real helpline numbers.

It does not alert anyone else. It does not report to a dashboard. It does not send data anywhere. It simply says: "You're not alone. Real people are ready to listen." — and shows the numbers to call.

Lighthouse is designed for everyone: young people, older adults living alone, and anyone in between who might be having their worst day.

Supported Platforms

Lighthouse monitors conversations on the 12 most widely used AI chatbot platforms:

ChatGPT
Claude
Google Gemini
Microsoft Copilot
Character.AI
DeepSeek
Grok
Pi
Poe
Perplexity
HuggingChat
Le Chat (Mistral)

What It Detects

Lighthouse uses 103 carefully written patterns across four risk categories:

Patterns are weighted by severity. A casual mention of feeling down will not trigger Lighthouse. But when the language crosses into genuine distress, the helpline panel appears.

Smart Helpline Routing

Lighthouse detects age context from the conversation and shows the most relevant helplines:

Helpline Contact For
Samaritans 116 123 Everyone — 24/7, free
Childline 0800 1111 Under 19s
YoungMinds Text YM to 85258 Young people
The Silver Line 0800 4 70 80 90 Older adults
Age UK 0800 678 1602 Older adults
Mind 0300 123 3393 Mental health support
Crisis Text Line Text HELLO to 85258 Text-based support
Beat 0808 801 0677 Eating disorders

If the conversation mentions school, homework, or GCSEs, Lighthouse prioritises Childline and YoungMinds. If it mentions retirement, grandchildren, or care homes, it prioritises the Silver Line and Age UK. Eating disorder patterns always surface Beat alongside Samaritans.

Important: Lighthouse is not a substitute for emergency services. If someone is in immediate danger, call 999 or 112.

For Charities, Schools, and Care Homes

Open Source

Lighthouse is fully open source under the MIT licence. There is no build step, no minification, and no obfuscation. Every line of JavaScript can be read and audited.

We believe a crisis tool should be transparent and free for everyone.

Why We Built This

AI chatbots are now a primary companion for millions of vulnerable people. When someone tells a chatbot they want to die, the chatbot might respond with empathy — but it cannot refer them to a real person. It cannot give them a phone number. It cannot follow up.

We built Lighthouse because that gap should not exist.

We chose to make it free because this should not be a product. We chose to make it completely private because vulnerable people deserve absolute trust. We chose to make it simple because the people who distribute it are charity workers, not developers. And we chose a warm, human tone because the last thing someone in crisis needs is a clinical alert.

Lighthouse is our contribution to public safety. It is free for everyone, forever.
